What is the function of a water softener?

A water softener basically treats water by removing hardness and minerals through ion exchange and the addition of sodium or potassium. A water softener usually has a mineral water tank with resin rollers and a salt water tank with salt. These can be combined in one tank or in two separate units. Users can choose to soften the whole water supply or just the hot water.

The resin beads are responsible for the ionic process that removes hard lime and calcium particles. The water enters the water softening tank and then flows towards and over the beads, whereby the proper contact removes excess elements and softens the water.

The electrical charge of the resin beads and the incoming water is opposite, and this difference attracts the softened and hardened water particles, which remain in the center of the resin beads, so the device discharges the softened water. When the resin beads are filled with liquid particles, the softener automatically enters a regeneration cycle with the supply of water, and the hardened resin bead particles are then washed away with salt water or a salt mixture.

As only a certain amount can be stored, a regeneration process or salting is necessary. A quality water softener contains resin beads that last as long as the water softener. If conditions are normal, it is not necessary to replace it. However, the salt solution needs to be replenished regularly and experts recommend using a form that is as pure as a commercial tablet.

What is regeneration and can water softeners harm a septic system?

During operation of the water softener, hardness particles accumulate in the water softener resin layer. When the build-up reaches a certain level, the water softener automatically starts the process of mixing the salt in the tank with a few liters of incoming water to clean the particles from the resin layer. The tank is then rinsed and ready to repeat the water softening process.

The regeneration process usually takes from a few minutes to more than 30 minutes, and its effect can be heard far and wide. Some people believe that regeneration is harmful to their sewer system, although under normal circumstances it does not affect its performance, lifetime or even leakage of drain soil into the sewer field. Water softeners are therefore not a threat to septic systems.

Many water softeners are equipped with a three meter long pipe which drains the water after regeneration. If a drain longer than 3 meters is required, an additional equivalent drain pipe must be added. However, the drain must not be more than 30 feet from the water chiller. The amount of water used for regeneration varies greatly from model to model, but most average models use approximately 50 gallons of water during each regeneration cycle.

Regeneration usually takes place in the middle of the night when no water is being used, but can be set for any time of day. If water is used during regeneration, it comes directly from the well, which is a problem for some families.

This is solved with a double tank as it has a reserve tank. While one tank supplies water, the other regenerates it and vice versa. This allows for a continuous supply of soft water when someone needs water early in the morning.
